One day a year doesn’t feel like nearly enough time to celebrate the dedication and love given by dads. Well, how about a whole month?
For those in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas, the city is packed with an exciting lineup of activities. So why not take a break, get out of the house, and treat Dad to a day of…well, anything he wants to do. Here’s a list of popular activities occurring in June in and around Baton Rouge.
Take Dad out for Birding at Burden
There’s a decent chance Dad might just want some peace, and the Burden Museum & Gardens is the place to find it on Saturday, June 17th.
The 440-acre lush destination right in Baton Rouge includes the LSU Rural Life Museum, Windrush Gardens, and the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. The Birding at Burden event is for the early riser – the event begins at 7 a.m. and gives plenty of time to pair birding with other activities later in the day. The Burden Museum & Gardens claims that 320 bird species have been spotted right in and around Burden, and bird lovers will have the opportunity to bring their gear for an exciting morning.
Tickets are $5 through the AgCenter Botanic Gardens page.
Celebrate Juneteenth at the Donaldsville Juneteenth Music Festival
The Father’s Day weekend lines up perfectly to get outside and enjoy Juneteenth with live music and great food. The 27th annual festival will celebrate African American culture from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17th at Baton Rouge’s Louisiana Square. The event will include a health fair for African American health and the festival’s music lineup includes The Michael Foster Project, the Royal Essence Show Band, and Red Tape Musiq.
30 vendors from around Louisiana will be set up at the fest and the event is free and open to all.
Celebration of Fatherhood Cooking with Dads cooking session
Fathers on a Mission is sponsoring this healthy cooking demonstration that pairs a father and their kids together to learn the art of the Hawaiian chicken kebab. A chef and nutritionist from Fathers on a Mission will guide participants through a build-your-own kebab recipe while fathers get the opportunity to cook with their children.
Fathers on a Mission is a nonprofit that states they are “one of the only nonprofit organizations that empower men to become better father figures within their community.” The “Cooking with Dads” event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 17th at the Family and Youth Service Center in Baton Rouge. Participants can purchase tickets on the Fathers on a Mission Eventbrite page.
Father’s Day picnic with Dad at the Blackwater Conservation Area
Sure, he could lay on the recliner and take a nap, OR you could rustle him up to lounge at the 57-acre Blackwater Conservation Area.
The preserve was listed by 225 Baton Rouge as one of the region’s “hidden gems” and holds a diverse range of ecosystems. Visitors can fish in one of its two large lakes, picnic at the pavilion, or have a wandering hike through its nature trail system full of bald cypress and cottonwoods. The conservation area also hosts events throughout the month like yoga and pickleball and will host “Movie at the Lagoon” on Friday, June 16th. This month’s movie is Disney’s Strange World.
